The brave mom wasn’t going through her challenging situation by herself; she had her two loyal offspring with her. One calf was about six months old while the other was around five years old. They had sought shelter on a hill covered in foliage, which couldn’t be reached by cars. As a result, a helicopter was called in to carry out the airborne rescue mission.

The task at hand was to move the mother elephant and her calves to a safer location for medical attention. A helicopter was summoned to fly over and inject 15 milligrams of Etorphine Hydrochloride through a tiny dart. The drug began to take effect within nine minutes, allowing the team to slowly guide the elephants down the hill with care.

The older calf kept a watchful eye on the younger one as they cautiously moved away from their sleeping mother. A group of rangers kept a close eye on the calves to ensure they were safe while waiting nearby. The veterinary team was able to examine the mother’s condition while she was sedated. They found a septic wound on her left abdomen that had been caused by a spear about a week ago. Despite probing, they found no foreign objects in the wound.

Fortunately, the spear did not enter the peritoneal cavity and only affected the abdominal muscles. The first step towards healing involved removing dead tissue and pus with the help of Hydrogen Peroxide and gauze swabs. The wound was then thoroughly cleansed with a large amount of water before being disinfected with Tincture of Iodine. To speed up the healing process, green clay was packed into the wound to absorb toxins, prevent sepsis and promote recovery. The elephant cow was given Amoxicillin antibiotics and Flunixin Meglumine anti-inflammatories through parenteral administration to support her recovery. This marked the beginning of her journey towards recovery, offering hope and relief to this resilient mother. This heartwarming story highlights the dedication and cooperation of individuals and organizations committed to safeguarding wildlife’s well-being. The tale of this courageous mother and her calves represents the victory of compassion and solidarity in the face of adversity.
